I've had problems with these things for YEARS,and the only thing I ever found that helps AT ALL is to put a non coated aspirin directly on it for as long as you can stand it.Your dentist can give you viscous xylocane...which kills the pain for a few minutes at a time, but does NOTHING for healing.

CANKERS (apthous ulcers) usually occur on the inside of the lips in small clusters of 1-3. There is no known cause but plenty of speculation. Some people just seem to get afflicted. It is not an infectious agent, and therefore not transmissable.
The best treatment is a corticosteroid ointment in a waterproof base - the only one I know is Kenalog in Orabase. This relieves the symptoms greatly and speeds up healing. It does not prevent recurrence.
COLD SORES are viral (herpes), and occur usually on the outside of the lips. Very contagious. If you get to them early enough, then antiviral ointments may halt them, but you have to apply it frequently as per instructions. Once they're established, then there's not a lot you can do.

Not really a remedy, but steering clear of acidic fruits & veggies (all citric fruits) reduces the aggrevation & a salt water rinse is usually soothing (1 tsp salt into a cup of warm water) Good luck

A little iodine on a q-tip works, just dab the sore with fresh iodine two or three times a day. Try to let it dry before closing your mouth again.

Try swishing around in your mouth, hydrogen peroxide, and it should help. I have a friend that swears by it! Give it a try.
