I went to New Orleans the other day on my way back from Texas and come to find out New Orleans was celebrating gay pride. I dont mind if people want to be gay or not to me that there business but there is one thing that really teed me off....

Walking down the street they have American flags hanging off the light post but instead of the stripes being red and white they were rainbow colors.

Does anyone else think this is disrecpectful to the flag. To me it disgusted me and was the same as if they were sitting there stomping on it....I think the American flag is something that should not be fooled around.

If they want a rainbow flag, then they should make a rainbow flag or banner from scratch. Yes, I do think it's very disrespectful.

The flag you saw is a variation of the Rainbow Flag, one of the symbols of the Gay Rights Movement. The most common version of the flag consists of the six stripes - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet - and the flag symbolizes diversity and inclusiveness. The flag which includes the 50 star canton in the upper corner is often known as "Rainbow New Glory". However, most Rainbow Flags flown or displayed at gay rights rallies in the United States simply consist of the six-striped flags, omitting the 50 star canton.

It is not a mockery of the US flag in any way. Rather, it can be seen as a call for inclusiveness and tolerance of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community in the United States. Thusly, Rainbow New Glory would not be seen flown at gay rights rallies anywhere else in the world, being a purely American symbol for gay rights.

The use of a rainbow-colored flag has been used by various movements over the years, especially the Peace Movement, but in recent years has been associated with the Gay Rights Movement due to that movements widespread use of the flag at gatherings and rallies.

I agree totally with Charles D. What a great answer! I'd add that this is really a case of free speech - they are trying to express a thought, that America is made up of all types. This is a very American, melting pot sentiment.

I think part of your problem is that the gay pride march was a bit offensive to you. I feel uncomfortable around gay demonstrations also. There would have been something that would have ticked me off if I was there. Maybe the music, taking up the street, there would have been something...

My question: do you think you would have really noticed and been offended by this temporary display of a US flag variant if flag-burning wasn't a hot issue now?

I don't see what this has to do with the Military topic area, and as a member of the military, I don't see why people get all gushy about worshipping the flag. the oath I swore was to support and defend the Constitution, not the flag. If they want to adjust the colors of the flag, I say, good for them. It's their way of expressing their pro-american views, it's not intended to be disrespectful (i.e. stomping on the flag).

Is it not supposed to be showing gay pride in America? Surely the mixture of the 2 flags is supposed to represent the freedom to be gay in the states not as a racial slur against americans.
Personally I think America is far too uptight a country that has very little to be proud about!!!

Definitely disrespectful. I do not agree with the whole gay pride stuff, but everyone deserves to be respected.

Absolutely revolting, Sarge. It's a shame that the folks who do this are more concerned for their lifestyle than the country that has abandoned all principles to allow such a display.

NOT ONLY IS IT DISRESPECTFUL BUT IT'S A SHAME THAT THEY DESECRATE THE VERY THING THAT GIVES THEM THE FREEDOM TO BE QUEERS. WE GO THROUGH THAT CRAP IN NYC. THEY HAVE A TRAFFIC NIGHTMARE PARADE ONCE A YEAR.
