They don`t have to defend themselves - they won`t fight a war ,they always profess neutrality. The ONLY thing The Swiss ever do in wartime is steal money from Jewish families and then refuse to return it in peacetime.

The image that the Swiss have developed over the centuries is of a people who excel in manufacturing chocolate and cuckoo clocks, who are reliable trustworthy bankers, have a mania for obeying laws, and who are ever ready with the Swiss army knife to open a bottle, take stones out of horses hooves, sew on a button, open a can of beans etc., etc.
Be aware that this is an image only, and it has been a brilliantly successful one, keeping the Swiss out of every European conflict since Napoleon's time, and ensuring that whoever was the actual victor, it was to the Swiss that the profit went.
In fact the Swiss have no army as such, but every Swiss citizen over the age of 18 is a well honed fighting machine, full of blood lust, and well versed in the arts of guerrilla warfare. Each citizen has a veritable arsenal of artillery and ammunition hidden in the roof space. It is for this reason that the traditional Swiss chalet has such a steep roof, in order to conceal the weaponry stored there.
Rest assured that any invader would face rather more than a few men armed with small knives, they would face the most sophisticated of weapons wielded by the most highly trained and dedicated of warriors, who know every inch of their mountainous fortress country.Any invader would be rash indeed, and would be very unlikely to live to regret his error.

What planet is the guy on who said they are the second largest army in Europe? They are about the smallest not just in Europe but the world.

Although they have modern weapons and training I would not advise you to try taking them on with the weapons you describe! Even the smallest Swiss army knife has a larger blade than those used in 9/11 and would be more than enough to kill with.

I assume this was intended as a humorous question.

GOOD QUESTION.

In fact, Switzerland -- lovely country, great mountains, railroad runs on time, unpolluted lakes, you never get sick from bad food -- has a lot in common with George W. Bush's America:

-- Guns. Every male has a gun at home until he's over military service age. And knows how to use it: he's tested every year.

-- Taxes are low. Well, there's a wealth tax, and income tax isn't so low. But far lower than NY or CA or any state with high taxes. And ZERO capital gains tax and low -- very low -- inheritance tax

-- Family farmers are subsidized. Not agribusiness like in the USA

-- No Mexican illegal immigrants. We have no homeless people on the street. Begging stops at the French (or Italian, Austrian, German) border.

Hey, I live 3 miles from the French border on Lac Léman and THERE IS NO RECORDED CRIME IN MY TOWN.

And to get back to your question: visit the Vatican and look at the SWISS GUARD. They've got SPEARS!

But yes, Wenger and Vitrinox Swiss Army knives are great. If only they gave them to the troops . . .

Who cares? I've read that during the Nazi era, the Germans considered but decided against invading Switzerland during WWII because their planners calculated that they would lose four SS soldiers for every Swiss soldier. I think that says more about Swiss Army training and their willingness to defend their neutrality than anything else I've heard.

mastap425, I think the Vatican has its own army. They are called the Jesuits. See oath of same on line. Some Jesuits are priest, but not all.

Don't have the link for Jesuit oath, but it can be found fairly easy. They too are fierce fighters. The Jesuits wrote the book Dale Carnegie made famous. How to be all things to all people.

Hasn't Angus Macgyver and James Bond taught you anything? The military version has a laser, a F-16 and harpoon missles. We just see the civilian models.
