I volunteer as much as I can. Last summer I volunteered in a Romanian orphanage. I wish I could volunteer more, but I have to work and volunteer work is often expensive and time consuming. I think that because I am privileged to be a citizen of a wealthy country, I have a responsibility in the world. However, I think it's important to help people who are asking for help and not impose my help on people or in ways that might not be welcome. Volunteering abroad, I met a lot of people who want to impose their values on the people they're trying to "help." I just think it's important when you're volunteering in a foreign country to respect that there will be cultural differences, and sometimes things aren't better or worse, they're just different. Those are the kinds of things that don't need "help."

I used to volunteer for a local charity, but didn't feel I got much support or information about the charity, so decided to leave.

I actually work for another charity and we are always looking for volunteer helpers. Our charity wouldn't survive without the wonderful help we get from our volunteers, and I notice that younger people are now coming forward to help aswell which is great. I also do extra unpaid volunteering for the charity I work for at certain times. If you are wondering whether to volunteer or not - go for it !! I am sure my experience (see above) is just a one off.

Unfortunately there aren't as many volunteers as there should be. In my opinion a lot of volunteers are well-to-do people with very little worry in their lives but I may be wrong. There is a tremendous amount of social strife in the UK not to mention international terrorism so people don't think about volunteering these das.

I would love to volunteer , however I am one of the unlucky ones who has to work full time to support my daughter. When I win the lottery I would so do full time charity work. Especially if it involved going overseas to poverty stricken areas. Would humble me!

I do love volunteering because it makes me happy. It makes me feel the most important person in the world because I can share myself to less fortunate ones (not just financially), I make them happy, I give them hope and I make them feel loved.
