Is this normal for the Catholic religion? We have a Catholic Church down the street with signs out front advertising Casino, beer and band. I'm not a catholic and was wondering if this is normal fundraising for a Catholic Church? I'm not knockIing them. It's probably bringing in a lot of $$$

Yes, it is a Catholic church/school. There are single signs posted.. One says "beer" another says "casino" and the other advertising the name of a band.

UKjess - I agree with you, but I'm not Catholic either. I was just curious if this is against their religion? I'm asking because I don't know.

Gambling and consuming alcoholic beverages are not violations of Catholic Doctrine so long as they are not done in excess. When such behavior is moderated, then it is fine. Nor is there anything wrong with partaking in such activities when a church is hosting them as a fundraiser. Mind you, those running the fundraiser have a responsibility to make sure no one is gambling and/or drinking in excess.

And yes, these "Las Vegas Nights" do bring in a lot of money.

+ Raising money +

Catholics believe in having fun and building community while raising money.

As long as having a pretend casino is not illegal in that community there should be no problem.

+ Alcohol +

Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, ... (John 2:7-9)

Wine is used throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was to turn water in wine at the wedding in Cana.

It is true that we should not become drunk but used in moderation, wine is a biblically acceptable beverage.

Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works. (Ecclesiastes 9:7)

What would Jesus do? Jesus had a cup of wine with dinner.

If some people wish to totally forego alcohol to eliminate the temptation to over indulge, that's fine. But I don't think they should force that unbiblical teaching onto others.

+ Music +

Catholics have 2,000 years of sacred music history and enjoy all types of music.

With love in Christ.

Even Jesus enjoyed weddings and other get togethers.

He even provided the wine.

Catholic schools are expensive to operate, as the government provides no funds for them, so fundraisers are absolutely necessary to keep tuition down.

Why not take the money that would normally go only to enrich casino owners, bars, and theaters, and use it to help provide a proper faith education for the children?

When it comes to making money, the church will stoop to anything yet try and get money out of them if you are in need..... they don't want to know. The catholic church is the most profitable business in the world and they own the best real estate too.

ARe you sure that's catholic? And are you sure the church behind the advertisement doesn't know or is aware about it?
as far as I know, the catholic church will not advertise such products as these are vices not healthy for the human soul.

NO! That is NOT normal fund raising for the Catholic church! That is ridiculous.

Oh for heaven's sake - so long as you do them all in moderation, there's nothing intrisically wrong in any of those things.

I'd be astonished if this were a permanent feature of the church - maybe it's a one-off fund-raiser.
