CDex is a superb free CD file coverter (ripper) that will convert WAV files to mp3, and other formats as well. It can also re-encode mp3s to normal WAV files for use in a normal CD player.

A Google search will reveal several places from where it may be downloaded.

You can download free software like itunes and go inside the preferences and switch the import file to mp3.

Use a different program LOL.
Download something as simple as Musicmatch Jukebox (free) and that defaults automatically to MP3.

In Windows media player, select tools, options, rip music, format, select mp3. (use latest wmp, version 10 )
