We have a new border collie puppy, about 3 months old. She's a very smart dog and has learned "down" and others. However, when you want her to come to you, she very often will just turn and go the other way. I am not sure what the best technique, given her age and breeding, would be to get her to obey this command. This is a new problem for me.

Treats! always give her a treat when she comes, and the number one rule is.... NEVER NEVER!!! call your dog to you for punishment, they will then associate coming to you as a negative experience....

Just use constant and consistent positive reinforcement when you call the dog, start out with a 20 foot leash and call her to you, when she doesnt come reel her in while coaxing her with a favorite toy or treat, then praise her abundantly and repeat repeat repeat... making sure to consistently reward the proper behaviour and use the same command in the same tone of voice. Make sure you dont give her a treat ALL of the time otherwise she will be upset when you dont give her one and will soon learn to only come when you have a treat. In all fairness though make sure you do give her a treat if you say you will. My dog is well trained to come when I call and if he hesitates I just add, "want a treat?" and he cant resist. So teaching your dog what the word "treat" means can also be a bonus and you can use it as an incentive to come, as I said before just make sure you give it to her if you say you will.

Make it a very good thing to come to you. Getting a dog especially a working dog to come to you can be tough. You have to make the dog think that coming to you her pack leader is more fun than anything else she is doing. Simply wait til she is calm, then get some peanut butter or cream cheese or whatever really good treat she likes and call her in a happy voice. Do this several times a day for a few days then move on to more active times for her always up the treat or reward for higher activities. Also, I suggest you read "A dog Year" by Jon Katz. It Will help you understand the responsibility of owning a BC, or any working dog.

Get a 15 foot leash and put it on the dog tell the dog go play. when the dog is away from you and interested in other things call the dog a few times. If the dog does not respond use the leash to in force that command. give lots of praise and a small food reward. Repeat over and over a few times a day every day. The goal is to get the dog to come to you on the first command

doggy treats do wonders. I am guessing that you already use a happy voice when you call her, so make sure she has not had dinner yet. Most of the classes I teach in pup training, I make sure that i have all of the pups attention. That might include soft small treats in my left hand. trust me when your pup learns this, she will come.

We've always taught our dogs to come by calling their name, ie: "Fido Come!" - when they come to you, praise them mightily and give cookie (if you are going with food rewards). You should also teach that 'sit' is part of the 'come' command. When they come to you they should automatically sit in front of you. If you want to do that, then when they come to your call, have them sit before giving the cookie. Always praise the specific act, "Good come, Good sit" etc.

Use a doggie treat. It will get them used to coming to you!! And then slowly ween them off.
