Xenophobic means fear of aliens -- specifically, the fear of anyone who is different. Look at it from this perspective.
In the old Norse cultures, there were five categories of beings. Locals. Outlanders (Utlanning), who are part of our culture but from a different village. Foreigners (Framling), who are from a related culture, but a different tribe or country. Strangers (Ramen), who were from a different culture, but still could be communicated with. And Aliens (Varelse), someone or something with whom communication and understanding is impossible.
It is human nature to fear the Varelse, the Aliens. Because we cannot ever understand them or interact in any meaningful way. Some people also fear the Ramen, the Strangers who are very different, because those people cannot tolerate or accept such differences.
Xenophobia is the irrational fear of not only the Varelse, not only the Ramen, but even Foreigners (Framling).

A lot of words, to do with health, come from Greek & Latin base, as this one does...it describes a certain condition.

Why is it dumb? It's been around for longer than you. Because is sounds like Xena the warrior princess? Then give her the award for a stupid name - oops, they just named a new planet Xena because the discoverers liked the show. Go fiture.
