To protect the life of Tom Robinson from the angry townspeople. Tom was being tried for the supposed rape of a white girl.Remember that this was a time when black men could get lynched just for being accused of raping or even touching a white woman.

because Tom Robinson was brought back and when the town heard about it they were angry and planning to go down and possible harm him in some way so Atticus went down to keep watch over him so they couldnt touch him.

And because he was black people didnt like him to begin with so they believed the obvious lie that Mr. Ewell told to cover up the fact that he beat her and the others and neglected them
