Natural gas in 2003 provided 24% of the world's energy needs (ref http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/ieo/nat_gas.html ). It is the cleanest in terms of harmful emissions into the atmosphere of the fossil fuels. There are many technologies involved in its production, purification, transportation and use which make the study of natural gas helpful to mankind. An interesting development is new technology which may succeed in sequestering the carbon in natural gas (and other fossil fuels) thus preventing its release into the atmosphere. (Ref

By researching gas we can build new and better ways of harnessing it's power. Natural gas is a consumable energy source that provides the ability for mankind to produce work (through engines, ovens, etc.) or heat and light for use in the home.

Because you can reclaim methane from garbage dumps, sewage disposal sites and natural breakdown of plant matter. That's why swamp gas is flammable. You can make your own auto fuel from wood or coal by building a biomass generator. They did this during WW2 in England and Australia. They called it producer gas.
