The people (bride groom other guests), a welcoming happy atmosphere, and a sense of fun dancing music..

I think the best thing is the music and the dancing.
As far as the food goes, by the time the reception is here you're too hungry to realize what the food tastes like.
Liquor helps too, but you should check your state laws on that. In some places if anyone were to get in an accident (hope not) they can hold you partly responsible.
I still say music, dancing, and family fun.
Good Luck!

It comepletely depends-- you could provide all those things and still the vibe could be uncomfortable for people.

No one cares about the cake. They care very little about the food (unless it was a once in a lifetime fantastic experience, or it was absolutely horrible-- those they remember-- everything else in between they won't remember it a week later).

People care about a happy, polite, gracious bride, and care that they have been taken care of as guests should be. So study up on your Miss Manners books before planning anything else.

Everyone remembers a bride scowling and arguing with people, family fights, couples who don't send thank you notes or who have a cash bar, etc.

Lots of free alcohol.
Good food.
Good desserts.
Good music.
And a bride and groom who give everyone a little attention and who are having fun.
Also you have to make sure that your bridal party is on the dance floor, because then they will make everyone else want to dance.
Also, you should have some games in between songs to get everyone involved, other than the bouquet and garter toss.

What makes people stay is a good DJ. You need someone who is going to play great music, be energetic, and get people on the dance floor. A lot of liquor doesn't hurt either.

To see friends, relatives and share in the Bride and Groom's celebration. The food, drink and dancing are just bonuses.

The people getting married and the entertainment. Food and alcohol are a good way to keep people their but a good dj gets the party started and keeps it going
