My male cat did the same thing. I changed litter. If you are using the dusty kind, try the white balls. Most cats are very picky. He might not like the way it feels in his paws. My cat that did this also made the litter go out of the box as well.

there are a couple different things you can do.
1. take him to the vet first to make sure there is nothing wrong with him physically.
2. if he is cleared physically, it might be that he doesn't like his litter. try switching to an unscented litter or a different brand even.
3. when you clean up his mess, don't rub his nose in it, it will only **** him off. pick up the poop w/ tissue and drop it in the litter box.
4. make sure he knows where the litter box in and has some privacy.. maybe an enclosed box? if he has an enclosed box, maybe he needs the lid off for a while becuase he is scared of it.
5. they also make a litter that attracts cats who aren't using the box. i believe it is called cat attract.
6. have there been any major changes in you life lately? a move? new pet? new boyfriend? etc? this can affect your cat and stress him out more than you may realize
7. when you clean up messes out side of the box, use and enzymatic cleaner such as nature's miracle or petzyme. also, using a blacklight helps to make sure you've gotten it all.
8. keep the box clean as well
9. if your cat is always messing in a certain spot, put the litter box in that spot
whatever you do, don't hit the cat, spray it with water, or rub it's nose in it. cats don't respond to discipline. it just makes them mean. but DO reward positive behavior. when you see the cat step out of the litter box after pooing, give him a treat

Well there could be several reasons.
1. Your cat smells unrine or poo from another animal in your carpet.(Marking its territory)
2. The litter box is not cleaned enough (cats are VERY picky about that)
3. Was your cat born or raised outside (aka a ferral)? It is a known fact that a ferrel will have great difficulty grasp the litter box idea if they ever do. They will go anywhere and everywhere they please.
Only thing i can suggest is replacing carpet and padding if there has been urine or poo on it at one point or another. Or if the cat is pooing in just one spot of the carpet place the litter box there and see what happends. If it is a ferral cat try placing the litter box in the place it usually goes and then place grass and leaves and out doorsy stuff that will make them think they are outside and can poo in the grass/leaves ect. I hope that one of these help you!

Sometimes even well trained cats may use areas outside the box. Don't punish her but find out why she is doing this, it could be environmental, medical or territorial.
If your cat is trying to use her box by straddling the box and missing? Maybe change her type of litter or change the location of her box. Is her box big enough for her to move around in? Does she have privacy in the location of her box?
If it's a medical problem, it could be FLUTD, a urinary tract infection. You will have to take her to a vet.
When she does go outside of her box, clean the area well. Generally household cleaners will only mask the odour ( as a cat's sense of smell is very keen ) use a product called " Febreeze " it will work much better.

Check the litter box. Is it the litter or is it not clean enough? Cats are very picky when it comes to their litter box. If your cat is going potty in the same place outside of the box, try putting his food there. He won't poop on his food.

If a new type of litter doesn't help, try finely shredded newspaper for a day or so. See if there is anything that encourages the cat to use it. Then slowly replace with regular litter a little at a time every day taking away whatever is an attractive but not convenient type of littler for you to use.

Have you changed the brand of litter recently? Is the box completely clean? I once found that I had not cleaned the box in a while, so my cat used the basement floor next to the box. From that time on, that spot seemed to be a favorite place to mess....clean litter or not!

That's weird. Usually cats know that their litter box is where they should go by instinct. Talk to a person at the pet store so that they give you something for it. I'm sure there is some type of trick that you could use.

The cat probably goes in the same area right? the scent is there so you have to remove the scent with cleaners then try to train it to use litter box.

My cat started doing that when i moved, whenever i found a pile of poop, I would take her over to it make her smell it and scold her... then i would pick her up and drop her in her kitty botxm, which she proceeded to use, worked like a charm, i guess do this a couple of times and i think she'll get the message, animals don't like pissing off their owners
