i've had him for a few days. he steps up and lets me handle him, but occasionally when he is out he bites if my finger is near his mouth. how can i show him that biting is bad?

Do not "flick" your bird!!! They are behaving in a natural way, and they do not understand why you are hurting them.

I have 2 conures and an Indian ringneck that I have perfectly trained. Here is how: When the bird goes to bite you, drop your hand - not enough to knock him off or make him fly away. Just enough to put him slightly off balance. Birds like to feel secure. That is why they give you a gentle bite before they step up. They want to make sure your hand is secure. You will have to be consistent, but each time they go to bite, slightly drop the hand, and they will learn that biting makes the "perch" unstable.

The best solution for any pet (and yes, a bird too) is a water bottle. I would squirt him when he bites you. We also have a quaker parrot and that's how we got her trained. And they can also speak. I didn't think they could but she does, and makes really cool noises too. They are very sweet. Just remember, birds choose one favorite and you can't change it...

Well what does he bite? If he bites other people tell them to stay away from Quaker Parrot. Well does he bite you too then stay away from him only when you have to give him good and stuff.

Birds do not understand or learn from punishment, but unpleasentness is a different story. If the bird is intentionally biting and not just using its beak for balance or as a third foot, when it bites, blow a short but stiff blast of your breath at the birds face. No harm done, but they hate it.

when they bite shake your hand that they are perched on lightly. eventually they realize that biting causes earth quakes, then put them up. quakers want to be handled and eventually they get the picture. spray them down with a water bottle after it rains they feel vulnerable and less aggressive.

make sure he has a bell or toy which he can attack. it will get his aggression out.

also if you have nail polish or dirty hands (what they consider dirty) they may try to bite you. birds are picky and want to keep their feathers clean.

I have a sun conure, He will nip a little hard at times. If I tell him no like I just might flick him in the nose with my finger finger he leans back and looks at me out of one eye. He knows that I will thump him back for bitting. He stops but seems a little pissie for a few minutes. But he gets over it and is ready to play.

If he keeps it up I knock him in the floor and he will either go back to his cage or start running around begging me to pick him back up.

They know when they are in trouble..

And no I do not flick him hard enough to hurt him. Just more of a bully or I'm the bigger kid flick and when I knock him in the floor I more of just keep pushing him off till he has to jump or fall.

Make him bite on something that he doesn't like and then, he might stop.
