Look into the Canon digital rebel, or Nikkon D50. Both are available in packages with lenses for quite a bit less than $1000, and both are very good cameras for amateur photography. If you're looking for a professional level digital SLR for that price no way.

The Sony costs $1000 for just the body. If you add a 2GB memory card and just one decent zoom lens (not a cheapo - otherwise why bother with a 10 megapixel camera), you're looking at over $1600.
Here's an in-depth review for the A100: (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydslra100/page30.asp)
Personally, I'd wait for the Nikon D80 or the Canon Rebel XTi. Those models cost about the same, they are at least as good as the A100, and you'd have a much wider selection of lenses and accessories.
If you want to get the whole package for under $1000, get a Canon Rebel XT or a Nikon D70s. These prices of these models have been slashed since the replacement models were announced a few weeks ago, making them the best value for money of any dSLR.

I have a Sony digital SLR camera but not that model. I can say this though Sony has some of the heaviest on the market and after about 3 hours of it hanging around your neck you will wonder why the heck you ever bought it.
I would go to Best Buy and pick them all up and play with them. If you are lucky you might get an employee that actually has a clue what a camera is and can tell you the features of them the only reason why I say best Buy is because they are about the cheapest and if you need to return it for service or if it breaks they are everywhere.
I have another digital camera that quite honestly is way lighter and takes pictures that are equal to the SLR and does not require a bag full of changeable lenses which are pricey by the way. I still use my SLR Canon for high quality photographs or slides and with one hour photo places they are processed fast enough for me.
Personally, I wouldn't buy another SLR digital.

I'm very happy with my Nikon D-70. It's 6.2 megapixels, which I find more than adequate for most purposes I need it for, and it's easy to use. I've had Nikon cameras for a long time, so I enjoy having one that has a familiar look and feel. Unlike some of the brands out there, Nikon have kept their digital SLRs looking and feeling very much like their 35mm counterparts, so it feels like a "real" camera. Some people might find it a little heavy compared to other digital cameras out there, but I actually like the feeling of a sturdy, hefty camera.
I also hear there is a new Nikon model out there with 10 megapixels, but I haven't researched it, since I've only had the D-70 for a couple of years and I'm not ready to invest in an upgrade yet. Anyway, nowadays I think you should be able to get a D-70 for a little under $900 with standard lens and battery/battery charger.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Wow that looks great. Problem for me is the fact that I would have to buy lenses for it which would require at least another $1000. I prefer the pro-sumer models with an attached lens since I do not have a lens collection and do not want to acquire a collection. But also consider that with such capacity this camera offers, you need a top end PC to handle the images because they are so large. Furthermore, there is no benefit to this large image capacity if you don't intend on printing posters.
