Typically the average person should consume at least 2000 calories a day to stay healthy. However, your height and age can affect the number. Basically the taller and younger you are the MORE calories you need. According to statistics the average adult male is 5' 9'' tall. If you are this tall your ideal body weight is 160lbs. In this case to maintain this healthy body weight, this man should take in 2300 calories a day, and that is only if he is lightly active. If a person is MORE active they need MORE calories. Calories=Fuel. So thats an example. I am a 5'4" 20 yr old female that is lightly active and i need 1900 calories a day to maintain healthy body.
Basically, to get back to your question. The only person who should be living off of 1200 calories a day would be about 4ft tall, 106lbs, and 60yrs old. So if this describes you then you are ok. If not, you should seriously consider changing your nutritional lifestyle. There are lots of websites out there to calculate your personal body need. One good one is :

Go to this link and find out your calorie needs.
One more thing. To answer this, "Does anyone actually eat up to 2000 calories per day?"
Yes. My husband is 5'11" , 190lbs (which is healthy), and he eats about 3700 calories a day to maintain. He works out and is active so that accounts for some.
Hope this helps.

Consider this, Gatorade has like 50cal per serving and the 32oz bottle is 4 servings.... Its not hard to go over 2000 calories. I probably consume around 2500 + with the amount of Gatorade I drink. I don't eat much because I work outside in a hot climate (Florida) and am constantly drinking Gatorade and water. 2 bottles of Gatorade is 400 calories, so eating lunch or anything really, puts me over the 2000 mark easily. I also do a lot of heavy repetitive lifting and work on rooftops, so I burn through the calories pretty easily. I guess it depends mostly on the person.

With normal activity, 2000 calories will just sustain you're weight. 1200 cal / day should help someone overweight lose 2-3 pounds per week.

Most people (in North America, at least), especially young men, eat at least 2,000 calories per day. Many of those calories come from unhealthy foods (fat, sugars, carbohydrates), which is why obesity rates in North America are so shockingly high.

A normal size Western-type person can not survive on 1200 calories per day unless he or she is quite sedentary.
Are you a "little person?"

Most Americans who buy any fast food at all (burgers, chips, fries, nachos) ingest close to 3,000 - 4,000 calories a day. And that doesn't include all the sugary drinks we eat. That's why so many Americans are overweight and morbidly obese.

I have to struggle to stay under 1800 per day. I could easily eat 3000 a day if I don't watch what I eat.
