Go to www.akc.org, click on 'breeds' then 'breed rescue' - these groups work to find homes for dogs that need a second chance due to owners getting transfered, divorced or ?. They charge nominal fees for vet care & other expenses incurred while under their care. Good luck!

If you really like & care about dogs, enough to seriously want one as a pet, then please consider the health, temperament, & overall well-being of the dog you get, as more important than the dog just being "cheap." Remember, this is a live animal & best friend you are looking for, not just an object. Getting a dog is a commmitment you make for the WHOLE rest of the dog's life. So choose carefully, not just based on cost. The poplular myth is that there are no decent purebred dogs in shelters, or that all dogs in rescue groups or shelters are somehow messed up. The REALITY is that if you are patient, you CAN find a NICE purebred dog of one of the breeds you're looking for, either by rescuing one from a shelter, or by adopting one from a rescue group. In each case, you will probably be asked to make a donation or pay an adoption fee. But the fees at a shelter or a rescue group will help to keep the shelter or rescue going, & will not be as high as the prices charged by pet stores, breeders advetising pups in the newspaper, etc.. And oftentimes, the rescue or shelter dogs will be healthier than the mass-produced puppy mill dogs that some stores sell. SO, where do you start? You can go to www.akc.org (the American Kennel Club website), where they have detailed info on the breeds, & links to breed representatives, breed clubs, & breed rescue organizations. By checking with the national or local breed clubs or rescue groups for the breeds you like, you can get info on the dogs that they have available to adopt. Even if you have to give them some info about yourself & your home, travel a bit to see the dogs, or make a donation, it will be well worth it, because you will get a quality dog at a fair price. Also, some of these dogs are mature but not ancient, & they are already done with puppy issues like chewing, housebraking, being hyper, etc.. Also, check with your local animal shelter, & any local dog rescue groups. You would be surprised how many purebred dogs end up in shelters & rescue groups. People get old or sickly, pass away, move into places where dogs are not allowed, or discover that they can't handle the cost or responsibility of keeping a dog, & their good dogs end up in shelters or with rescue groups. Ask around, you may find exactly the dog you want. Also, if you look in the local newspapers, try the free or inexpensively available to a good home dogs. The puppies will probably be out of your price range, but for the same reasons that they end up in shelters, some dogs (usually adults) are sold at low prices or given away by owners who can't keep them. Also, you should check on www.petfinder.org to see listings of available dogs. Good luck, & be sure to learn as much as you can about each breed, & about each dog you consider, before adopting one. Have fun finding the BEST dog for your situation.

Check the animal shelter.
Where you will likely fall for a healthy mutt instead of an inbred yap-thing that your family will secretly hate.
Actually, Rats run about $5 at the pet store, and they're about the same as chihuahuas. Freindlier, cheaper to take care of, cuter, easier to train...

If you need a dog for a low price can you afford the vet bills that WILL pop up? Dogs get sick and they get hurt. It can be expensive.

Try your local animal shelter. I adopted a 4yr old Chihuahua from my local shelter this past March. It's suprising how many purebreeds you find there.
