It is where air (specifically the oxygen in the air) is dissolved in the liquid and the reactions take place in the presence of oxygen.

in that side of the septic system there is a constant influx of oxygen to cultivate specific bacteria which will optimally degrade the organic material in the liquid layer of your septic tank.
