i bought 2 soft drinks, both costs 1.55, so it should be 3.10 plus tax which is 3.25 or 3.26 total. Instead, i got 3.18 total. Why?

Check the local tax where you were - It couldbe lower than you thought. Also - there are some drinks which aren't considered "taxable" such as milk, water, etc.

It's tough to answer your question without knowing which state you purchased the soft drink in.

Sales tax differs by state - some states like NJ charge 7% and some states like Delaware don't charge any. In addition, as one poster above alluded, certain products are subject to sales tax and others are not. I have not personally come across a state that charges sales tax specifically exempting soda (although a good deal of food is exempt).

By your math you are implying that your state sales tax is 5%, as you expected to be pay $3.25 on a $3.10 purchase (.15/3.10 =.05). Maybe your state sales tax appears to be actually closer to 3%, hence you were charged .08 on a $3.10 purchase. However I did a quick search and was unable to find a state charging a 3% sales tax. Therefore, your situation is surprising.

Bottom line: if you stop buying soda you will have less confusing situations. Stick to water, it's better for you.
