Your hair was too dark for the product, only a permanent product will work and then maybe only with a pre-lightener. Don't go drastically different though - I did, I went from dark blond to blue black and it was such a pain to maintain, then when I grew it out it looked so bad.

The temporary dyes are not as strong -hence the world temporary-not knowing which brand or color you choose this could be your problem- You didn't leave in long enough You didn't choose the right shade for your hair color now- Try looking on the back of the box if your hair is that dark you may want to try a shade that would seem very dramatic but in reality because of how dark your hair is it very well drops it only slightly with the temporary design The permanent colors have a whole new set of rules

no matter what the box says, you can't dye dark hair to a lighter color. The only way you can get your hair lighter, is if you use some sort of chemical bleach. If this is the first time you are doing it, you might want to go to a beauty parlor. If you do want to do it at home, make sure you read all of the directions, FIRST. Do the patch test! And remember that you are chemically altering you hair; you will definately have to keep your hair conditioned.

If you have dark hair and want to go lighter, it's usually best to get it professionally done at a salon.

You might want to bleach your hair then use a dye. When your hair is dark you have to do that sometimes. Just make sure not to overprocess.

Temp colour does not lift out color. You need a permanent color that has a higher volume peroxide. But now, because you have a chemical coating on your hair, color won't lift artificial color. You need a prelightener.
