If you are both strong and respect your relationship then you can make it work. It will only work if you both really want it to. Talk about what your vaules are and what you expect from the relationship. Make sure you are on the same track. Long distance is very hard. I've experenced it both before and after I was married. It will change your relationship. So make sure you are ready for that. Good luck! Make sure you are always open and honest with one another.

Make sure to keep in touch through phone, e-mail, text message, regular mail, surprise visits, etc. By doing so, you will keep the romance alive. The biggest thing is to keep the lines of communication open; that is the biggest concern when in a LDR: communication. So, don't lie to each other, and keep each other informed about the going ons of your daily lives. It really does not matter what you are studying because you can still come out with both your degrees and a relationship. Just remember that love takes time and commitment, and you must be willing to put in some effort to maintain your relationship. This relationship can definately work out and come out really strong in the end. Plus, MA and NJ are not all that far apart; it could be much worse! (Such as NY and CA). So, you are luckier than some, but still unlucky that distance must be between you. Good luck in your relational pursuits.

Long distant relationships are hard. I was in one for 2 years. He is now my husband and has been for the past 10 years. What worked for us is that we talked every day, even if it was only for 10 minutes (no special phone plans back then). We wrote letters to each other too.
You might try buying cell phones and get a plan that has unlimited mobile to mobile. Write letters to each other. Make that time that you do see each other special.
It CAN work, but it takes much more work than if it wasn't a long distance relationship.
