i am only 14 and i am boarding at a school in hawaii. my parents are all the way in richmond virginia. i want to get over my home sickness but home is the only thing i can think of and so i keep on calling home. the way the school works is that we work to pay for tuition , but most the times when we work it is hard for me to, same goes for school i am afraid i might get bad grades so i get more homesick. there is a six hour time difference between me and my parents so sometimes it is hard to talk to them. and i cant go to town until saturday and sunday so i need someway to get home off my mind.

i am almost in the same situation, but i live in Wa state and my family are in NY. I get homesick alot to and I know that calling home only makes it worse. I got myself into lots of hobbies such as cooking, writing and reading and scrapbooking. I also go to college full time. Do you have any friends that you can talk to, or hang out with to help pass the time. Try to keep yourself busy, that way you wont think about them as much. I am 26 and only moves away from my haome last october. !4 is young, and I know that there is a big diffrence between our ages, but i totally and completley understand how you are feeling. If youi ever need someone to talk to , feel free to talk to me! In the meantime, find a hobby or smoething that you enjoy doing. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

I'm not sure what the answer is for you now, but it does go away eventually.

Home is the only thing you know but as you get to feel familiar with your new surroundings, you will feel more connected and then the homesickness will leave.

I don't know how long it lasts, but it lasted about three months with me when I went to college.

In addition to calling, maybe you could write e-mails to your family when it is too late to call them. Also perhaps you could e-mail a few of your old teachers and friends.

Keeping a journal also helps or maybe you could get your own myspace account. This would connect you with your old friends.

I am thinking that you could allot yourself some particular time during the day to focus on home. A time to call home, think about home, write some memories about home, meditate on home. But when that time is up, you tell yourself that you are done now. The trick is to replace your habit of continually thinking about home with other activities. Create a schedule of things to do or find some social thing to do. Making friends, spending time with adults that you like or with children (they are a bundle of entertainment to interact with) or go visit some elderly folks in a park or home. In other words, find what you like to do. And in time you will feel at home there.
