Are you just planning to work temporarily or are you looking to make a permanent move? I'll assume the former, based on your wording.

The majority of American Work Visas are Non-immigrant Visas, and allow foreign workers temporary residency so they may live and work in America.

Each visa class differs in their duration of stay, although in some instances visa holders are able to extend their stay in America providing they meet the requirements for an extension.

Specialty Workers (H1B Visa)
Applies to foreigners entering America to perform services in a speciality occupation.

Temporary Skilled or Unskilled Workers (H2B Visa)
This category facilitates the entry of foreign workers who wish to enter America to engage in non-agricultural employment which is seasonal, intermittent, a peak load need, or a one-time occurrence.

Intracompany Transferees (L1 Visa)
The L1 category applies to foreigners who work for a company with a parent, subsidy, branch, or affiliate in America. Applicants must be employed in America in a managerial or executive capacity (L1A Visa) or as a person with specialised knowledge (L1B Visa).

Employment-based Preference Visas
The employment based visa preference system allows American employers to petition the USCIS for permanent residency on behalf of certain qualifying employees.

Temporary Skilled Visa for Australian Nationals (E-3 visa)
The E-3 Visa category is specifically for nationals of the Commonwealth of Australia. Applicants must be employed in America in a specialty occupation.

It really depends on what you are going to be doing. I moved to CA to work 2 years ago but I had already been hired and my employer paid for my work visa. It will depend on the type of job you are doing. If you don't have a job and are hoping to look for one once you get here, you might need a visitor's visa. The best thing to do is talk to an immigration lawyer. You will need one.

Its may sound nice to come and work in California which has a nice weather, and nice places to visit as you can imagine.
But at the same time, it is no haven here. You work non-stop, you pay lots of taxes, you spend arund 20% of your salary on fuel as you travel on never-ending freeways, and you get sunk up in credit and loans.
I dont mean to discourage you, it could still work out for you, if you get a high pay job and manage your life very well without spending much. But think about carefully, and weigh your options between your current residence in UK and here in California.
About employment visa (work permit), you need a visa called H1 which you only get when a company sponsors you to work here. So if u want an employment visa, you should apply to companies here in USA...when you they hire you, they can sponsor you and get you this visa. So finding an employer to work at in USA is important, that company will act as your sponsor and get you the visa. You should do that before coming to California as your best bet. Otherwise, you can apply normally at the US embassy in UK for the normal tourist visa...but this of course wont allow you to work here, it is just a normal tourist visa. They dont usually give an employment visa's in the embassy, unless you have a sponsor company in the usa who is willing to hire you. What you can do is apply to normal visit visa at the embassy, and then come here and find a sponsor here to work with who can get you the employment visa. But this is really risky, u may come here and may not find an employer who may sponsor you...Its only very big know companies do it who think they may need your skills because they cant find someone locally with such skills here. I guess if you apply for a trainee jobs (or placement jobs) at some of those big multinational companies, then they will sponsor you to come and train for a year for example. There are many trainee or intern opportunities at these companies. But still, apply to any job apportunity, whether trainee or a normal job, whatever you can find...until you find a sponsor to get you here. Speak to your local company branch in UK, who have branches in USA california...they may be able to help. Best wishes...

Get a working holiday visa. Some countries or companies have this and it allows you to work for one year anywhere in the US. Check with your immigration services to see if one is availible

Check with American Embassy or the American Consulate to get the forms needed to fill out. Do it now because the paperwork will take some time to process.
