The Stoke-on-trent city council have levelled some of its cemetary's and disposed of the grave stones so that now it is more difficult to trace your family, and to honour them.they should be bloody ashamed of themselves.
sorry for the rant but these are people who made this city, miners and potters alike. And now if you want to have a bit of decent pottery to take back home with you ROYAL DOULTON figures are now made inThiland.

I think it's heinous. That has happened here in America too. The good ones who feel they need the land for something else have created another site for the headstones so that their descendants can still go an honor them. Some, however have just razed cemeteries and the stones and any traces are long gone. As a genealogist, that just totally appalls me.

I lived in Stoke on Trent for about 4 years. Some of the people were O.K., but I found the majority to be rather strange, with an attitude that was a real throw back to the 1930’s. In the early 1990’s an international firm of consultants was hired by the Stoke council to produce a report on how the city could move forward given the shrinking pottery industry. The report concluded that Stoke had the manual skills, labour force and transport infrastructure to move from pottery to high end electronics. The report was rejected by the council on the grounds that Stoke had been built on pottery, had always been great because of pottery and would thrive in the future through pottery. That is why much of it is now made in other countries. The grave yard story is really just another example of short sighted, arrogant and crass stupidity on behalf of the council. It would be more appropriate to ask just who’s sticky little fingers are caught in the till on this one – who on the council stands to gain financially. I always thought that the Stoke council and many of the city residents were given a special water supply that was deliberately contaminated with heavy metals from the pottery glazes so they could have the potteries running through their veins. It also accounts for their terminally stupid behaviour. I moved to New Zealand, that’s just how much they managed to piss me off.

I agree. I think if a cemetery is really old and unkept, the most they should do with it is turn it into a park. Near where I live in North London, they do exactly that and then place all the tombstones around the outskirts of the park, against walls and fences.
