My elder sister used to spread Tarot cards for herself at times. She never believed in going to gypsies and all, preferring to believe that the spread of cards showed her her own innermost thoughts - and that she could learn from that. So I am not asking about cyrstal balls and all that shite.

Do you think, when you spread the cards yourself, it could have any meaning? Does it clarify, does it foretell things, does it make you think deeper? I am interested in any view on this matter.

I've never been one to take such things too much to heart. However, that said, a friend once did a reading in my absence (unsolicited) and wrote me with the results. Suffice to say, I was astounded by his insights. So much so that I almost crashed into the back of a bus (I was trying to read and drive, yes I am that silly). We had not spoken in quite a while, so he was unaware of the situation I was in at the time, yet his reading was specific enough to be very relevant...

My wife ia a tarot reader. I am a geomancer (earth divination)

when you do a divination for yourself useing your own cards the reading will be more accurate. however you will be more inclined to look to the traditional meanings of the cards or runes and ignore what the cards are actually telling you. the placement of the card the way it is facing, and many other things can change it's meaning. as an experienced reader you are likely to read things into them that you wish to see and not what is really there.

the spread however can have a symbolism and just the act of placing the cards can help to create a meditative state.

most readers will not read their own fortunes because of this.

I do tarot, i don't think it tells me the future or anything but each card relates to something within you, for example your maternal side or the clinical aspect of your personality, when a card comes up it focuses your thoughts and your attention or that area of your life/personality and difficulties that may be caused because you need to work on different areas. So yes, i think if people are open minded and don't jump into that instant, 'its a load of rubbish and no i don't any thing about it so I'm going to be bigoted about it', thing then i truly believe it can help.

Actually it's not advisable to Spread the cards for yourself, most people lack the objectivity to be able to interpret a layout of the Tarot without attempting to see what they wish to see instead of seeing what the layout actually "means".

People can read their circumstances into whatever cards are produced. Like astrology, the horoscopes can fit many circumstances, same with tarot and a lot of mystical readings.

I spread cards for myself.

Not as a means of divination but rather to gain insight as to what is going on in my life. It is a form of introspection and meditation.

I spread cards for myself. For me, it helps me gain insight on a particular situation. Like, sometimes it shows me a different way to look at it.

Most of us know what we want and need from life. What we need to do to put things right and what we need to put work in, to get what we want out.

Personaly I think your sister may just find it concentrates her mind on a consicious and subconcious level.

Me, I write lists. Lots and lots of them. Neither of these are dangerous, so I would not be concerned on this count.

Personally, I dislike reading for myself. It's much too easy to color the reading with your own mind. My preference, actually, is to read for people I don't know well with no or little idea of their situation or questions--takes all the pre-conceived notion problems away.
