I prefer to wear street clothes, unless I am going in to do a procedure.

By the way, doctors should NEVER wear scrubs that they have worn outside the hospital when they perform surgery. It is not sanitary. (As the charge nurse of the surgical department or infectious disease house officer if you want verification). This rule is actually written in most hospital policy/procedure manuals, but is followed by few persons.

A lot of nurses and doctors wear scrubs even when they are not going to do procedure in a sterile setting, but stand the chance of getting blood, feces, or other body fluids on them or their clothing. I would rather have the hospital's scrubs stained than my own clothing. They send them to an industrial laundry that can do things about stains that I have not been able to do at home.

The doctors in scrubs are also attending to patients in the operating room. Lab coat docs are seeing patients outside of a surgical setting.

Personal preference, probably depending on how much physical contact they have with sick people, and don't want to take germs home. They always wear scrubs in the operating room.
