According to the label of the dewormer my vet prescribed (Paracur) for hookworms, it states not to give to a puppy who is sick...why is this and what are the side effects of giving the meds to a sick puppy?

In regards to hookworms- they are attached to the lining of the intestines. In order to feed, they secrete a substance that stops the dogs blood from clotting. When you deworm and then kill the parasites, they fall off, but the blood does not clot right away. In very extreme circumstances, if the puppy is already sick, the additional blood loss could kill a pup. This is how I got one of my boston pups- the "owner" brought the 4 week old pup in. She was covered in fleas, extremely anemic, blood not able to clot and infested with hookworms. We were in a catch-22 situation- we couldn't treat her without killing her, but if we didn't treat her she would die. So we got rid of the fleas, gave her a blood transfusion and then gave her the dewormer. She still almost died, had to have another blood transfusion, but she is fine now.
Giving a dog that has worms a dewormer will usually cause a bout of diarrhea- if your pup is already sick/dehydrated- it makes the problem worse. So long as they are supported through it- they are usually fine.

Deworm A Puppy

You should never deworm a sick puppy with any kind of dewormer. Dewormers are in essence a toxin used to kill parasites, however it can make a sick puppy even sicker and could potentially cause death.

A sick puppy should not get dewormers or vacciantions until the are 100% healthy again.

The medicine to deworm can make an animal sick, even if the animal is otherwise healthy. If you give the meds to a puppy that is already sick, the condition can be worsened. If the dog has any health problems (especially stomache and/or intestinal problems such as vomiting or diarrhea), you should wait to medicate for the worms until the dog is no longer ill.

Sounds like your puppy had a sever infestation of hookworm. You don't deowrm when they are ill because it can cause stomach discomfort in an already poorly feeling animal. You don't say breed or size or age? I would assume small to medium if he died as a result...if he was a large breed he must have had a very bad case.

It is better to give pyrantel pamoate (Strongid) to sick animals to treat hookworm. It is safer and less hard on the system. Panacur has been used on sick animals however and I have not seen any horrid effects. If the worm load is what is making the puppy sick, it will help.

Wormers are actually a poison, not a medicine per say.
If the puppy's immune system is busy fighting an illness, it would be on overload trying to fight a poison also.

You seriously need to find a vet. There are several different kinds of worms pups can get and different medications for each kind. Buying something in a store is wrong. They should be tested before being treated or the treatment wont work.

A bainfield vet gave a dewormerto my beloved dog and she was ill, two days later she died. She was only 5 years old and had lost 2,7lbs in a few weeks prier which was a sure sign she was sick to begin with. DO NOT GO TO BAINFIELD IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET. ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY,,,,MONEY,,,,MONEY. I am heart broken and miss her .....she was my life.

if the puppy is sick then you could give it an over dose from the meds along with the wormer, there is also the possiblility that the puppy have allergic reations to the meds and sometimes it can be fatal.
