I don't know. I've noticed the same thing, so I'm as confused as you. Maybe it doesn't mean a fall in numbers but a fall of atheists into Hell. That would explain it, I guess, but I get the feeling that the phrase really DOES talk about number of adherents.
Eh, folks always like to talk down who or whatever they consider opposition, I'd say that's probably why.

Well, in my experience, religious people and especially creationists tend to use the strategy of making atheism and evolutionism look like dying theories, soon to be replaced by the truth (when in fact neither is dying and both of them ARE the truth). It's a way of convincing those with less will power that they're right.

I have never heard anybody say that and if they did, I would place no importance to it. Some polls are taken, but even then the
results are seldom published except to further somebodys
