Give him some gum, or tell him that his breath smells nicely. I've also read that if you pretend to be someone else and send him an e-mail or something saying that "someone very close to you is worried about your breath", that works too.

Get a mint for yourself, offer him one and put a few on the desk or table and tell him in case he would like another. If he turns it down and doesn't take the hint just explain that you appreciate what a good teacher he is, but out of respect for him and yourself you need to be gently honest about his breath! After all he is a professional talking one on one and as you said gets close enough to be offensive, he needs to know.

Just be polite and direct. Offering a mint or gum would work and be subtle. You would run into the issue of having to provide them everyday and that would not solve your tutor's issue of chronic halatosis. You don't have to be mean to tell him that his breath is a little flat, he should appreciate your honesty since no one else seems to be upfront with the poor guy.

Offer him mints or gum, if that doesn't work try to hint at it by saying something like "you should probably try a mint" or "wow these are really good, try it" and if he doesn't take the hint make faces when he gets near you.

always have some gum or mints handy and before you get started get out a piece for you and then offer him some.
it's a polite way of fixing the problem without hurting his feelings.

simple, keep gum with you and offer a piece when he gets close, he will get the message.
if he says no to the gum, just politely tell him you would appreciate it if he chewed some since you are working so close together.

Pop a mint and offer your tutor one. Later on it may occur to him that he is offending you.
