I agree with Dane Lover's answer to an extent. The only thing I would add is if you do want a specific breed there are many purebred adoption organizations where you can go in addition to buying from a responsible breeder.
Personally I'd like to buy my next dog as a competition prospect/performer. But until I have more space I'm happy to have my three adoptees right now!

It's really up to you, Jen. Are you old enough to afford to adopt it or buy it. Taking care of them is fun but you also need extra money more than usual to adopt or buy it. If you still live with your parents and they're all for it and willing to help you out, then you know what to do. Chances are most parents would rather have you send it to shelter homes becasue they do not want to deal with it.

In the past I have done all three....I am a proud owner of a mix, and a purebred....I am not biased or anything. Though I think now I would rather adopt a dog from a shelter then buy from one of them small backyard breeders.......they do no good!

Adopt, everyone of my shelter dogs were the greatest, they seem to know you saved them and are forever grateful that they finally have a warm loving home.

I would definetly adopt. There are too many unwanted dogs in this world already. I don't understand people who pay so much money for a dog,and then breed it and charge even more for the puppies. I am for giving homes to the pets that are in dire need of love and a good home.

It depends on what you are looking for.If you are looking only for a comapnion and have no interests in a particular look, showing, competeing in dog events, hunting etc then adopting from a rescue or shelter is the best, however if you are looking for a particula "look" or trait, want to compete or hunt then you will need tolook for a responsible breeder of the breed in which your interest lies.

i will always go to the animal shelter first and look there. you are rescuing an animal in need.
why go to the pet store and spend hundreds on a puppy when you can go to the shelter and save a life. every dog and cat i have ever owned have come from a shelter and I love them all.
