My older son was in a co-op classes for Latin for two years. He is currently taking French through an online/at-home program. Other than that, I have taught him everything else, so far. As he gets older (he's 11 now) and needs topics that I am not as familiar with, I will consider co-op/online schooling again.
But, as has already been noted, many homeschool curriculae are designed for parents with little subject matter knowledge and often (even at this age) I find myself learning right along with my sons.

I've been homeschooling for 5 years and I've never come close to needing to hire a teacher or seek online tutoring. The reason is mainly the type of materials I choose to teach my children. Home education materials, resources, curriclulae, are written specifically to enable you to teach your kiddos at home. I would never choose materials that do not have extensive teaching manuals, ideas for enrichment, background info, so on and so forth.
So, if you choose your curriculum wisely, there is no need for outside help, and although it is hard work and can be quite time consuming, anyone with a heart to teach their children at home can. IMO, that's the entire idea behind homeschooling: it's you and your children.
Now, I am involved in a teaching co-op, where homeschool families get together once a week and offer enrichment classes, but that's not because I need help, it just something we enjoy doing.

You mean parents aren't capable of being real teachers?! After all ordering workbooks online and having your kid work two hours a day and watch TV the rest is such a great "alternative" education.
