Same Q, different category: Seriously, gosh. I'm just so sarcastic and my parents are so not cool that they just don't get sarcasm! I want a dad like John Ritter's character in "8 Simple Rules." His daughters were always sarcastic but he never tried to pull their pony tails out of their heads! Oh well, I hate it because all I ever do is like to talk back to everybody with sarcasm--even if they're my parents. But they're so touchy-feely and it's pretty darn annoying. So am I the wrong one here? They say my sarcasm is disrespect. I say they just need to get a sense of...whatever it is they need.

Okay, so reading back on it, I did sound like a rude, disrespectful teen, but still: should he be able to like thump down on my head and do that pony tail thing?

Haha, thanks everyone for the answers I appreciate it! It's really not that which bothers me it's the fact that my mom actually starts to cry and tries to "hold him back" or whatever--that's what I mean by the touchy feely part--it bugs me so much.

I too am a sarcastic person. But there is a time and place for it. My parents did not allow me to to talk back, and if I had used the sarcasim on them they would not have been to happy. Whether or not your parents should physically punish you for it all comes back to how they were raised. I don't believe that you use that type of punishment. Teenagers are hard to raise. Maybe they are frustrated by what you say. I love the show 8 Simple rules, but television isn't the greatest place to get parenting tips. Try to save the sarcasim for times when you are not in a discussion or arguement. It took me a long time to figure out where it fit in. Sometimes I am that way without even realizing it. All I can say is be respectful of your parents and if you see tham coming for the ponytail, run like hell. Good luck.

As Oscar Wilde said "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit". If you can't actually be funny, don't even try.

What they already have is a sense of ADULTHOOD. I appreciate you may need help understanding that word, but you won't get it because everyone hates a sarcastic git.

I deal with sarcasm by taking it as a statement. My son occasionally tries it.

Me: Are you hungry?
Him (sarcastically) Ooooh No.

I sit there watching telly, 20 minutes later he wants to know where the food is.

ME: But you said you weren't hungry.
HIM: But I am.
ME: So, were you lying earlier, or being a prat? The choice is yours. Liar. Prat. Prat. Liar. Which is it?

I got read the additional bit. So you are a sarcastic git WITH A PONY TAIL?? On boy, I can feel my fist just itching.

Give your poor mom a break, I am sarcastic too, and even though I think I am trying to be funny, I'm not, (some of the time).
Parents are here to guide you, and they are right to a certain point, I suppose it would be a lot (Cooler) to have parents like John Ritter's character, then again John has passed away, and I am sure he is missed by his own children, so be thankful you have a Mom that is trying to stand up for you.
As you get older, your parents will develop a sense of humor...believe me. So will you understand why they felt the way they do.

That's pretty funny. Well, yeah, I would sometime use that on my parents as well because I thought they asked a seriously stupid, obvious-answer question and the sarcasm just spills out to an open oppurtunity like that. But I eventually learned just to keep my mouth shut and say "Yes, mom/ Yes, dad" and let things be. It might be annoying to get used to at first, but learn it and things'll be much better in the house!

Have fun with all the advice!

John was a Actor...and like you said it was a character only...most folks do not respond well to sarcasm. So if that show you respond to others...your lucky that wacking has been the worst thing you got in the real world. But, folk do not respond well to being whacked ether. Is there anyone that you respect..that you could talk to? Sounds like you both need to chill and talk...but, the fact remains..they are your parents..win/lose or draw.

being a teenager is difficult, been there/done that.
You get out of a relationship what you put into it. This includes the relationship with your parents. Sarcastic sucks! Its not funny, it can be hurtful. Family life is not like it is on TV. Try being nicer to your parents and perhaps the ponytail pulling will stop.

A good whack is well deserved, usually earned when a child doesn't know how to define a relationship with their parents. It's not cute at all. If your parents have allowed you to be this liberal with your lip all of these years, I see your confusion, but you are wrong and should apologize and stop doing it.

You're just going to have to act fake around them because they seem like they are way too serious. It took my parents until the 3rd child turned 18 to get sarcasm. I had to give it to them in small doses

Why not trying not talking back for a while and C their reaction ?
Being sarcastic you harm yourself and you're not helping your image and self improving! B more calm ; life is not what the books tell us about or life is not what our idols do or tell, but what Us feel like being honest and useful. Read any book you like, but do whatever will enhance your environment! Be Urself, not others!
Ciao.......John-John.
