When you speak, try to do so quietly. When something is different from what you are used to in America, don't yell out that 'this sucks' or criticize it. Just accept that different countries are not the same as America. Honestly, if you are intelligent and thoughtful in your discussions with British people they will be quite nice to you. Americans become unpopular when they behave in a loud abnoxious manner and start criticizing everything they see or merely commenting on it in a very loud voice.
I doubt you will have any problems, if you have the intelligence to post a question like this, I have no doubt that you will handle it just fine. I found this interesting web site for another question earlier that details some language differences that you may encounter.

So long as you don't complain about things you do better back home, or boast about your material possessions (you'd be suprised how many do) you should be fine.
Oh and you'll find Bush is deeply unpopular over here, so if you're a supporter you'd be better off agreeing to disagree.
British weather is very changeable, it's unlikely to be as bad as people say but you should bring a lightweight waterproof of some kind. And comfortable shoes - our towns were mostly built before cars and you may find yourself having to walk further that you're used to. I'm not talking about miles and miles, but car parks tend to be further away from notable sites than you may be used to.
Hope I haven't offended - you'll have a great time.
PS No one cares about the War of Independance - it was so long ago, most people have forgotten that America was ever a British colony.

Well, I say just be yourself! :) You already are aware that there is such a thing as an ugly american, that is a massive step towards being respectful. What I found most annoying about tourists(no matter where they are from) is their tendency to shout instead of speak.. and also blocking pedestrians in the middle of the streets while they are working out their map. We do love tourists (i used to be one!) but do unto others what you'd like them to do to u.. Enjoy UK!! :)

I think that the fact that you ask such a question shows that you have nothing to worry about. You are obviously a good person who will have a good time here. Many Americans on holiday here are very loud and inconsiderate, but I don't think you are like that.
I hope you will have a great time :)

Don't worry; just be yourself. Generally, people are fairly accepting. Just be respectful of your host country: Do not criticize and don't tell people how things are better back home. I have travelled my whole life and lived in many countries and every single one of them has its stenghts and weaknesses. There is something wonderful to see everywhere.

Have a great time
Try not to be too loud
If you go to Scotland, don't walk around in tartan trews. And NEVER call the queen the "queen of england".
Other than that, you should be fine!

I would not make any references to the War of Indepedence as people will get offended.
You should be ok with expressions such as 'gee' 'yo' and 'shucks'.
Be careful on public transport as well.
