Drinking, in moderation is less harmful, and some studies show that light drinking can be beneficial. Red wine, for instance, contains something that benefits the heart, But so does plain grape juice.
Dark beer contains some things that can benefit pregnant women, (it used to be prescribed in olden days) but so can a healthy diet with no beer benefit a pregnant woman.
However, in the long run, I personally believe smoking to be LESS harmful than drinking (done to excess) because smoking does not impair judgement.

Drinking alcohol is NOT less harmful than smoking. Alcohol is a poison, so are the chemicals in cigarettes.

Smoking affects your lungs. Drinking affects your kidneys, heart, liver and intestines. If you want to know what is more harmful then ask yourself what is more important. Bear in mind, you couldn't last without all of them.

I guess it depends on how much you drink and what you are drinking. Drinking 4-8 ounces of red wine every day is actually good for your health.

Smoking a cigarette will not make you crash your car or run down pedestrians. Smoking a whole pack will not make you crash your car or run down pedestrians.

Let's see, what is it that can make you crash your car and run down pedestrians? It must be cigars, right?

smoking one cigarette is harmful, whereas having one glass of wine is not.
