Coming from a personal trainers perspective, the fastest and most effective way to reduce fat and retain muscle is to rely on the old tricks of cardiovascular exercise, while maintaining a healthy diet with high protein, and staying on a weight training routine. Try walking (fast-paced) on a treadmill 3-4 times a week for about 45-60 minutes per session. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated. Other types of cardio that can be incorporated into your fitness routine include a stair-step, eliptical machine, or stationary bike. If being in the gym all day is not your thing, try taking a pet for a long walk, or riding bikes at night with the kids. Keeping the heart rate elevated at a steady but safe level will keep the calories burning (meaning, it's not necessary to run like crazy to lose weight; brisk walking is just as effective). Always consult the help of a trained and certified professional before starting an exercise routine. But don't forget that without the proper diet, all your cardio will be a waste. Up your protein and veggies, and keep a moderately low carb intake. (Do not competely erradicate carbs from your diet. Contrary to popular belief, all carbs are not bad)

RE:
How do I lose fat without losing muscle?
I have an appreciable amount of muscle but I also have an appreciable amount of fat. What are some good tips to preserve the muscle while losing pure bodyfat? Can noticeable results be seen in 3 months of sticking with a good workout and diet lifestyle?

You might want to check out this new weight management plan called Cinch.
On most diets, you lose muscle, as well as fat. When you lose muscle, you lose some of your body's ability to burn fat, and your metabolism drops.
The doctors, nutritionists, and scientists at this company drew upon years of sports and nutrition science to create an easier and healthier plan. In a recent preliminary clinical trial, the scientists tested a proprietary formula enhanced with the amino acid leucine. People in the program lost fat, weight, and inches while retaining 100% of their lean muscle.
If you would like to know more specifics, feel free to contact me and I'll provide you with the website.

If you can't see results in one month the program you selected is not working.
if you want to lose fat, the first thing that must happen is that all the bread in the world has disappeared.
That is number one on the list. Your exercise program should build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Persistence is what pays here.
Keep up the good work.

Work out and eat the right amount of calories for you, low fat, higher protein, but don't cut any specific food group, such as carbs or fat, totally from your diet.
I just found an awesome website which is really helping me. I've lost 8 lbs in the past week and a half.
It is http://www.sparkpeople.com
It's great! I actually found it courtesy of an answer I read on Y!A.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
