Ok, cows are not considered gods. Cows are considered as sacred animals because it is a life giving, and calm creature.

Say a mother died in childbirth. Where would you get milk for the baby? Now a days it's formula, yes. but centuries ago it was cow milk.

Monkeys are not considered gods, but some people do pray to him for strength.
There is a long epic story, historically maybe true. Rest is exagurated (SP) There were these creatures half man half monkey called Hanuman, who helped a god called Ram rescue his wife Sita from a man who wanted to marry her against her wish. The reason people pray to him for strength because he carried a whole mountain on his shoulder in effort to help serve his lord.

Hindu beliefs though older than the bible are far more sophisticated and adaptable to modern science. They basically figured out the big bang and expanding and contracting universe over 5000 years ago. And were capable of thinking in terms of billions of years. They set the age of the universe at eight billion years. Pretty accurate considering they didn't have the Hubble telescope. Maybe God told them the truth of creation.

According to Vedic Literatures especially the Bhagavad Gita, There is only one Supreme God..Rest all are his servants...

The word for God in sanskrit is Ishwara or Controller...
So there are many controllers or Demigods.. But the supreme God is one and he is Called Krishna or Vishnu or Rama. and he has a very beautiful form ....same as the image by which Man is made...

There is mention of Surabhi Cow in Heavenly Planets that give unlimited Milk.. but She is not Supreme God.. Cow is worshiped as mother. Surbhi gets her power to give unlimited Milk from Supreme God and Cow is regarded as favorite pet by God. She gives us her milk long after our own mother stops.

There is mention of Hanuman, who is in Monkey Body... Even being in a Monkey Body, he is a great Devotee of Supreme God Ram. People worship him asking him to bless them with such Devotion to Lord Ram. He is also protector of the Devotees. And so he is worshiped for protection in preaching the Glories of Lord too.. But every one knows that he is greatest Servant of Lord Rama....

If you listen and learn from what Christians say or Muslim say, they will definitely misinform you...
If you want to learn about Vedic Culture the you must approach an Authority in that.
Other wise you will end up in misconceptions. Just as Muslims and Christians criticize each other, they criticize other religions too...

More far fetched than a god who flooded the world with more water than the oceans can hold and impregnated a virgin? They seem to be equally far-fetched to me.

yes thats true........you get used to such beliefs once you're brought up that way. I am a hindu myself......but i'm not quite religious.

You can only get a perfect answer to your questions if you get a bit integrated into the culture.
