Another small breed would be best with the Yorkie...One that is not a terrier would be the best bet..Gender doesn't matter if it is 'fixed' before maturity..

I work at a sanctuary, and we rehome many different dogs to many different homes. If you go to a rescue, you can get a dog, that isn't a puppy. Pups need lots of time and attention, and without this, they can get bored and destructive.
If you go to a rescue, they will have assessed the dog, and they will be able to tell you, whats the dog is good with, e.g. kids, cats, other dogs etc. They will be able to find you a suitable dog.
I would personally recommend a greyhound. They are not my favourite dogs, as i like mastiffs, although they make wonderful dogs. They are very gentle, placid dogs, and most don't mind being left.
Although many people believe that they need lots of exercise, this is untrue. They are quite happy to go for daily lead walks of about 20-30 minutes, and a good run, once a week.
Hope this helps,
Good Luck.

check out the american kennel club website, dog fancy magazine, or better yet your local shelter for an adult dog small in stature so you dont have to deal with the puppy stuff since your not home all day....also make sure you introduce the two and be sure they can become friends before you leave them the first time together
