If you are taught when you are a child that something is absolutely true, then you believe it until you are old enough to question it. But some people never mature enough to ask such questions of themselves. Still, how many people raised as hindus even consider shintoism and vice versa? Usually if you are going to follow ANY religion, it will be the one you were raised in. Once you question that one, you'll see that none of the others make much sense either!

It sure seems so, and I've read that an overwhelmingly high percentage of people tend to just follow their parents' religions.

I think that religion should be kept away from children, like cigarettes or alcohol or a driver's license or Plan B contraception, until you're 18.

That would be the best way of reining in its bad effects.

if religion=truth, then no truth does not depend on anything else. people are changing beings by nature, just like the world. people's character can and often does change. when people look for honest, objective truth then no- but when people cling to traditional, "I think I'll go with the majority of society", warm, fuzzy emotional side then yes- it depends on how willing to explore other possibilities the person is. some are too ignorant/arrogant, this is a given.

not for me... I was raised Anglican, but am no longer.

My son is being raised to appreciate all the world religions and told he can decide when he is older... I'll guess we'll have to wait and see when and if he chooses. My goal is to raise a child who is aware of all religions, the good and bad in each, and for him to make his own choice..

Almost universally, that is why so many atheists know so much more about religion that theists, they have had to break away from it by understanding and contradicting what they think to be incorrect over the years....nature Vs nurture type thing in most cultures..

Sure. Can't believe or disbelieve something you're not taught. You're raised to believe something, whether you choose to continue believing in it after you've learned the alternatives...that's up to you.

Unfortunately for a lot of people it is. I say unfortunate because it would be better if someone came to their senses later on in life. Be a rebel and believe in God on your own terms.
