Urban myths and legends currently in circulation usually have an element of warning to them. Myths in which young teen couples making out in isolated area come to untimely ends via psycho killers warn teens about leaving communal areas and seeking privacy. Other myths just want to entertain. Ancient myths often sought to explain elements of nature. Arachne and her weaving leading to spiders, explanations of how tigers got their stripes, etc. However, the most complex myths, mythic portions of the bible, the Upanishads, the Sutras, Greek Myth cycles like the Oedipus story, seeks to explain the human heart and mind. We are trying to tell the story of ourselves in ways which we can understand.

That I don't know, but I would check information on the author Joseph Campbell. He's rad and a myth scholar.
