I just got a kitten who is about two months old from a shelter, where he had obviously never been around people who were eating things he couldn't have in front of him. I've had to take away his wet food because it was giving him the trots so he's eating less as he's getting used to his dry food all the time. Every time we sit down for a meal which inevitably has meat in it (especially fish & poultry), he goes absolutely nuts trying to get at what's on our plates to the point where we feel that we need to lock him in another room with his own food to get him to stop because he's biting and clawing us to bits. One of our problems is that we don't have a table to sit at right now as we're moving shortly so he's literally climbimg up our clothes as we sit. Is there a different food I can feed him that will content him and not give him kitty diarrhea?? I feel like I'm depriving him.

My kittens liked to sample all my food at dinner. They liked to taste the applesauce, the meat, the mashed potatoes, the vegetables, etc. I finally had to use the spray bottle so I could have a meal in peace.

Please don't give up on the canned food for your baby. Meat is the natural diet of the cat. Just feed him a good quality canned food such as Natural Balance, Innova, Nature's Variety etc You do not want him to have just one thing all his life and dry food is really the pits, especially for a male cat. You can find the quality foods in small, owner-operated pet stores and they are also good people to consult about the right food for the kitten.

Any inexpensive grocery store food is 2/3 corn and does not give your cat the meat protein that his body needs. The highly advertised canned food, such as Fancy Feast, use very inferior sources for their meat.

Maybe make him up a little plate of your cooked meat before you sit down to eat would keep him out of your face. It could also establish a bad habit "begging" so it can be hard to decide.

1. Look into proper feeding of cats. Pat Lazarus has a great book; I think it's called Keep Your Cat Healthy the Natural Way.

2. Make sure the cat has had enough good food of his own BEFORE you sit down to eat yours.

3. Put kitty in a crate or in another room while you eat.

Keeping him confined to another room would give you peace of mind, but it wouldn't teach him anything. Try squirting him with water from a bottle or squirt gun or use noise. Putting coins or marbles in a tin jar works well. Just give it a shake every time he tries climbing someone. Air horns also make noise that cats don't particularly like (does anyone really?!). You're going to have to perform some aversion therapy to teach him that his behavior elicits negative consequences.

And it's not about the food you're giving him. Even if you were giving him mounds of fresh fish or chicken every day, he'd still be after yours. That's just how cats are.

Good luck!

Hi!,

You can give him kitty treats that are like dry food, but soft and chewy to your touch. And give it to him about the time you eat your meals so he don't bother you and your family. They have fish and poultry flavors for cats. Good luck.

Don't ever feed him tidbits from the table as this will make him worse. Keep him shut in another room while you eat. Maybe he will grow out of it. The spray bottle (water) may help too.

always leave dry food out for your cat, and it is a good idea to give your cat a taste of wet food every day, you dont have to give him the whole can, just a little bit, he likes the meat flavor in it and it is also good for cats, you can also give the cat a couple pieces of the foos you are eating so he does not feel left out, place it on a napkin or paper towel while you are eating ,after all he is part of the family...
[too much wet food is not good, balance it out
