I don't mean your local church or even a specific religion, I mean all religions as a whole ? I don't want to hear what some holy book or religious icon says about it. I want to know what you think about it.

Zilch. It just holds back civilization and knowledge as long as it can.

They start the search for truth. I'm not saying any religion is the truth, but they all insight a search for a greater truth.
I love the old prayer, "God keep putting those in front of me who are seeking the truth, but deliver me from those who have found it."
Religions give some people comfort in trying times, and they help organize charities.
As a whole I don't think they are a bad thing, but they seem to gather a lot of bad people who use their draw to insight evil things.
The inquisitors, witch hunts, try to suppress free thought, and start up numerous wars as well
That's the downside.
A major misnomer; "Jihad" a holy war.
I doubt very much as God has any use or desire for war.
But those self righteous zealots preaching their own agenda and claming it is God's will, do. They insist that we all come around to their way of thinking or parish.
Jihad was supposed to be about one's inner struggle with truth and was not about war at all.
If you want a sign of a God worth believing in. Consider this.
There is nothing more to a rainbow, other than light bending thru raindrops, or a flower than being a reproductive organ on a plant. Mankind can make water and rainbows.
But God gave us the ability to see the beauty in rainbows, and the colors and scents of flowers.
Mankind can't give that ability to anyone, but it should be ones sole purpose when spouting out doctrine, to try to help others find the beauty in life and nothing more.
Let God do the rest.

Religion is the moral backbone of Soceity, things like morals, traditions etc were born from religion or at least primative forms of it, a lot of your morals and ideals are from religions, you just do not know it.

Think about it though, most people do not work on Sunday's, most people celebrate Christmas, most people get married, most people do not kill, most people do not steal etc

We were just born with this commonsense?

Laws and the judiciary system. Sanitation. Orphanages. Out reach programs. Half ways houses for drug addicts. Protection to battered women. Food delivery to disabled people and senior citizens who otherwise would starve. Missionaries who feed the starving children where ever they are allowed to go. Housing to single parents and underprivileged families. Work programs. Trade classes to teach trades to displaced men and women. Clothing banks for men, women and children. Transportation for the needy in all forms. Volunteer programs in hospitals. Scholarship programs to people who otherwise would not be able to attend college. Food pantries in the inner city and jobs. I could go on all day and still not name all or give credit to all the good people who sacrifice for the greater good of mankind.

Religion..hmm..I don't like "religion" much..it has been twisted by man. But there are some that do alot of good..feeding the poor, clothing people...but like I said.."religion", to me, is man made..they took some of what God said..and the other part that God said that they didn't like..they changed it into what they wanted it to be...thus man's religion was born.

Jesus died so that we might live.

Religions are telling the procedures God wanted you to follow. New religion means revised procedures.

Well, it's instilled some morals into people who didn't have them. (Not saying morals weren't around before.) But that's about it. Mostly it's contributed bad things to humanity, like hatred and war.
