I know what I believe sin is, I am just curious what others believe sin is even if they don't believe in God.
I hope that comment about taking the time to reading the bible is not directed towards me. If it is then, please refrain from comments which assume you know more than others, this is what gives christians a bad wrap by judging others before first judging yourself.
If it wasn't then please forgive me.

Transgression. Simply put, that's it. It's a violation of a law, command, or duty, and in this case, you "transgress" against the laws, commands or duties of God.
In my personal opinion, I would be a little more lax in deciding what qualifies as sin and what doesn't. Like... eating certain foods on certain days? Not so sinful. Committing a lesser sin (like lying) to prevent a greater sin (like murder) should be totally excusable. "Sins" that don't hurt anyone (like bluffing about a surprise or having consensual sex that couldn't possibly result in reproduction) don't count.
Violating the basic human rights of others is detestable... keeping people from attaining equality, that's despicable... parents who abuse, men who rape, bigots who gay bash, they're all "sinning" in that they're violating the law. I'm refering to the laws on the lawbooks, violation of which will get you thrown in jail.
I'll tell ya, though, I don't like the term. It smacks too much of religiosity because, of course, it's a religious term. Being non-religious myself, transgression sounds more secular and appropriate to me... but as we're discussing "sin", I thought I'd stick to using the term.

In a God system:
Sin is the result of one acting against God.
I live outside of the God system. As such, I do not believe in Sin.

I don't think of anything as sin, in the sense you refer to it. Evil things hurt others, or deny the rights of others.

To cause harm, either physically or emotionally, to others or yourself. This includes willful disreguard for the well-being of others when you could have taken reasonable and immediate steps to prevent harm from occuring.

Killing without reason, invading a country without just cause, not helping those who have been through great natural disasters. You know, things like that.
