I took some frozen hamburgers to a tailgating party and only used half of them. The others that weren't prepared were completely thawed by the end of the party, so I decided to freeze them again for future use. This was yesterday. Are they safe to eat today?

You said the leftover burgers "weren't prepared", so I'll take that to mean they were not cooked. In that case, the answer is no, do not eat them! (even if they ARE only 1 day old)

Foodborne pathogens can be cooked away, but it isn't the pathogens themselves that can make you sick; it's the waste materials they leave behind in the meat. If you cook the meat...even if you burn it...it'll kill the bacteria/microbes, but if they have been there (in sufficient numbers), the meat can still make you dreadfully ill.

Now, if you had leftover COOKED burgers, and you re-froze them, they would likely be fine to eat at a later time (although they would probably have dried out a bit).

If you have a dog, feed the leftover burgers to him (dogs can handle foodborne pathogens alot better than humans can).

Meat should never be re-frozen after thawing. Most original freezing is a quick frozen process. Once thawed, it contracts some bacteria.
Check for any odor.
They may be ok in one day. "Cook Well Done".
Best to cook any thawed meats. Then the cooked meat can be frozen.

It's not the best idea because the bacteria (although frozen) is in your meat, but you can still cook it (if it doesn't have any funny odors and the meat isn't brown, then the meat would be really bad) and cook it until it's well done to ensure no infection.

Best not to eat well done meats like beef all the time because it develops some carcinogens.

I guess it will be safe if you cooked it really well done. I agree with Edward I, in future any left overs should be cooked first and then freeze again. Basically if you don't feel safe eating it... don't.

I would just throw them away if I were you. If they were frozen and defrosted ONCE, it would've been ok, but 2 times? Nope, you may have a lot of bacteria festering in there already!

Absolutely not, some bacteria in the ground meat will not be destroed by freesing them again, Throw them out, don't even give it to your dog, it could get violently ill and you have the vet cost's on top of it.
