I'm visiting York for my birthday on the 20th and 21st of September this year. I haven't been before. I will be on my own. I'm interested in finding out about the history and seeing some sights. And doing some sort of ghosty type thing. I want somewhere to stay for as cheap as possible. All ideas welcome!

You'll have a great time, it's a beautiful city.

York Minster is one of the most magnificent gothic cathedrals in all Europe. Check the service time and, if you can, go to sung Evensong, where the choir of men and boys will raise the hairs on the back of your head.

The National Railway Museum is free and well worth a visit if you're the slightest bit interested. Somedays you can get a ride on a replica of the first ever passenger train Stephenson's Rocket.

In the grounds of the Museum is the York Eye, a huge big-wheel you can see all of York from if, unlike me, you're not too scared to go up.

You can walk right round the City walls (or most of them) there are dozens of little streets and passageways to explore. The Castle Museum is pretty damn interesting as well, and there might be something good on at the York Theatre Royal. If you can afford it, the Yorvik Centre in Coppergate will tell you about Viking York.

For ghostly - there's the York Dungeon and there are nightly so-called ghost walks, though I have to say the one I did was pretty dull. The Tourist information people will be able to tell you more.

There is a Youth Hostel in York and I'm pretty sure there are one or two other student-type hostels. Once again, Tourist Information is your friend.

Climb up York Minster to the top. Not an ideal view at the top though. In the distance you can see power stations and slag heaps.
There are some lovely tiny side streets. there is a market where a guy does magic tricks. Best thing to do is get yourself to the tourist information centre or call before you go. They'll tell you what sort of tours are happening.

until you're extra particular, it fairly is an particularly annoying question to respond to. England has some rather gruesome places, like London, Manchester and extra considerable cities, and then it has some rather pleasing places like the Lake District, Cornwall, the Yorkshire Moors, and rather some extra rather pleasing places, or maybe with the reality that I even have in no way been to long island, i could wager it has it fairly is stable characteristics, and it fairly is undesirable ones, even with the reality that I even have basically considered undesirable ones, like the Bronx.
