Deep tendon or muscle stretch reflex checks for a reflex that only goes through the spine. It is elicited by tapping certain places (the knee is the best known) and watching for the quadriceps muscle to twitch. These are damaged in central nervous system problems, such as polio.

Superficial reflexes would be those that tested nerve endings in the skin, such as the cremaster reflex, where you lightly stroke the inside of a man's thigh, and the scrotum muscles on that side tighten, or a corneal reflex, to elicit a blink.
