I just repainted my kitchen and had many wicker and straw baskets on the top of my cabinets. They are all sticky from the cooking and dusty. Does anyone know the best way to wash baskets like this?? Thanks

mild detergent and water -- don't soak as wood will expand and then contract when it dries and the basket will probably crack.

Use a dry toothbrush first to loosen anything, then spray and rinse. Wipe them off with a towel and if it's warm where you are stick them outside in the shade to dry.

I have an antique wicker table and chairs and have done this many times -- the key is quick with the water!!

Also after they are dry adding a wood conditioner will help retain the moisture in the baskets and make them look like new -- apply with a dry toothbrush too.

a little grease cutting dish detergent or even laundry detergent.. a soft tooth brush and some patience... soft wash towel and tepid water.. that'll get the grease off..

just don't ruin the coating if the coating comes off.. there's coats you can get at the hardware store.. then before you reapply it (that's recommended really.. grease is really stubborn stuff) just wash off most of the coating also... and rough it up ever so gently then brush on or spray on a nice, weather, oil and other resistant stains.. paints.

good luck.

OH adding some lemon to the water and soak it for a few quick minutes may help urge off the grease.

on baskets you will use a dark stain finish on.. some red wine will cut that grease also.

just don't walk away from the baskets.. you must be there to watch everymoment. if you're careful and patient with the grease and the woods... you'll save those baskets...

remember just be zen about it..

before you add your finishes again... (if nessesary) just dry these baskets out on a dry hot day.. the wood will thank you for it.

use a air purifier with bleach in it, or use a bleach and water combination. then be certain they are thoroughly dried. a heat, moist environment is great for mold nevertheless, which you may desire to might desire to be utilising the bleach answer on a regular foundation.
