DO NOT do cardio. I am a personal fitness trainer and a person will lose up to 50% of muscle mass they have built from working out in 6 months if they stop lifting weights. She will remain toned.

Stop going to the gym -- that'll get rid of the excess muscle. But you said lose the muscle and still keep toned. In that case, she should keep going to the gym and use smaller weights. The amount of muscle she puts on is proportional to how much weight she is lifting (pushing, pulling, etc.).

If the muscles look bunched and too defined, she should do lots of stretching exercises, Yoga is a good one. In any other way, having strong muscles is a good thing. After spending all that time and money, why damage your body to be unhealthier, but more "beautiful".

Unless she did steroids, its difficult for women to become over muscular.

Sounds more like she ate too much, and her exercise is keeping cellulite from showing, but she's gotten fat. Cardio helps.

Professional women body builders drastically reduce their calories ... do more cardio ... eat less protein (which they ate tons to get muscle). Yoga also helps strech the muscels and this gives a longer leaner appearence.

She will start to lose her muscles and tone almost instantly. Like 2 weeks. If she wants to stay toned and fit then going to the gym constanly is the ONLY way to go.

perhaps she is taking muscle "enhancements"?

muscles need to be kept up, if she stops working out with heavy weights (which build muscle mass) then the muscles will decrease... if she uses lower weights, but with more reps, she can maintain her tone while decreasing the size of her muscles...

she could also try lots of stretching/yoga/pilates... stretching will lengthen the muscles making them appear less bulky...

Just tell her to back off on the body building...not stop...just back off a bit. The excess muscles will decline, although frankly, how that could be a problem to anyone is beyond me.

Cardio and lighter weights. Just to keep the muscle she has.
