It helps clarify the time you are talking about. When you see it written down of course there is little need for both a.m. and morning but in speech people often mishear things. Giving a little bit of extra information isn't numb! It's polite. It's sensible. Would you like to miss a plane before you taxi company got misheard you on the phone and sent your taxi round at 3 p.m?

I'm a journalism major, and I've never noticed it. Either my friends don't say it, or I just ignore it. Who cares?? It's not like they used it in a newspaper article.

it may be a non sequitor, but not everyne understands the am pm thing. of course it would be much better if it were written, yes, it was three o'clock in the morning.. but i guess you already knew that, didnt you?
