yes agree not all scratching needs a vet, but sometimes it is mange and this needs vet reatment ,some is due to nerves and other as you rigtly say only need a good grooming and bathing.why dont you do an information webpage just on this topic.there are penty of free ones around, then you vcould also add your grooming services at same time

It really depends on how severe the scratching is and how long it has been going on for.

A good flea shampoo or another suitable dog shampoo may be all you need to sort out your poor dog's problem (it can't be very comfortable), but if this doesn't help, the scratching may be due to an allergy or mites in which case you may need to take your dog to the vets.

For some good advice on dog dry skin, mite infestations and advice on choosing a suitable shampoo/conditioner, you may want to visit http://www.advice-on-pet-care-and-pet-product-supplies-online.com/Dog-Dry-Skin.html. You'll get some good down-to-earth advice there, which may save you the expense of vet bills!

However, if it is an advanced case, and your dog has broken skin and is obviously distressed, please, please do take it to the vets.

Absolutely NOT.. I study the dog ove a few days to see how persistent the scratching is.. If it is quite persistant, I then give it a good bath with a VERY good flea and/or mange shampoo. that clears it up immediately.

Tell them when they come in to have their pets groomed. You could start a website. Word of mouth is pretty good.
