I would love to have a dog, I am not trying to be biased, because I love dogs, But I am looking for an Alaskan Malamute puppy. Firstly, I don not care if it is a mixed breed, purebreeds are overrated and I don't believe in paying three to eight hundred dollars on a dog for it to "Look" a certain way. There are so many babies that need homes now, and they are already here, so why pay a thousand dollars for a day when you can save one for little to no cost? thats where my need for help comes in. I would like to write down a variety of programs to help me adopt a dog. i do have a local pound but I would like to go over my options, so please help me if you can. I need information somewhat specific, if not then just give me what you can, please. i live in the Wayne county district of NORTH CAROLINA, thank you for your time and I respect everyone who loves dogs for thier cuddly personalities and not just thier looks.

GOOD MORNING,
I AM A BIG DOG LOVER, HAVE THREE. WHAT I WOULD DO IS CONTACT SOME OF YOUR LOCAL VETS, THEY HAVE GREAT RESOURSES. SOMETIMES THEY WILL HELP THEIR CLIENTS ACTUALLY PLACE DOGS.
GOOD LUCK.

I am a dog lover as well! Its good that you don't mind having a mixed breed pup/dog so many people want those purebreds.....to become a backyard breeder!

My first suggestion is to call your veterinarian or some local vets. They have many resources and may help you find yourself the kind of dog you were looking for. Next put an add in your local papper and/or look in the paper for ads for free/minimeral cost.
Also there are Akaskan Malamute breed rescues...do some online searches to see if there is any in your area. Also, about the purebred thing, some breeders don't over price their pups....sometimes they have a breeder sell out that may be actually cheaper or sometimes their is an accidental breeding between two dogs and they sell/or give the pups away.
hope this was of some help to you and good luck!

If you are looking to adopt you can do some searches online. There are Alaskan Malamute rescues. Or you can possiably go to the closet humane society, maybe in the next county over.
You can go to www.petfinder.com you just but in what kind of dog and your area code and it finds dogs up for adoption in your area that are purebred and mixes.
Also you can go to www.akc.org and find breed rescues.
Good luck.
I have a rescued black lab that is 8 months old if you are intrested. He was left chained to a cart return outside Kroger. E-mail me if you would like more information.

I of course don't know anything about the "pound" in your area. I would certainly adopt there or at a humane society. Dogs are much more complicated in their behavior because of their breeds than are cats.

At the shelter where I volunteered there were information handouts about the characteristics of the various dog breeds. Of course most shelter dogs are "mixed breeds". Still an adoption counselor can "guesstimate" what breeds seem to be mixed in a possible adoption dog and counsel you on what you might expect from the dog as to exercise requirements especially.

I think if an Alakan Malmute were to get off leash you might have to fly to Alaska to pick him up!

At any of the rescue sites you can get a dog and often it is pure, but previously owned by someone that didn't know the breed. I have a siberian husky female from a rescue. She is pure, but was definitely owned by someone not knowing sibes. They thought they could break her from running and digging by beating her and putting some type of acid in her mouth, and this was all before she was even a year old. Don't assume because the dog is pure it doesn't also need a home, she definitely cost more than the humane society, but it was worth every penny because I know what kind of home she has now. If she gets the chance she still runs and digs, but since I owned one before I know it's part of the breed. Now if she happens to sneak past my kids or one of their friends and is out running the difference is someone goes out immediately and starts looking for her and we all lavish attention on her once she is back safely in the house!

I would suggest that you check with your local humane society. If they don't have what you are looking for then they can put you on a list as a possible future adopter as they have lots of dogs of different sizes and breeds that come through regularly.

First of all... I am very happy to hear that you would EVEN consider going to a city pound to look for a dog.. that is admirable(I get all of my pets from "death Row" in the city pounds). The best place to go is to visit a neighboring city that has a pound and try to get them to notify you IF they ever have a dog that you are looking for.. Secondly, always visit the Vet offices as they have knowledge of individuals giving away or selling dogs

personaly i would go with the pound, humane society, or the aspca. Not all, but most of the other shelters out there require way to much of the pet owners and over half the people that go to these places leave empty handed because they were denied pet ownership. It's not worth the time.

I'm a dog lover and I got my dog at a local shelter, I suggest you give them a call, tell them the breed you're looking for and ask them to give you a call if they get one. You can also look online at petfinder.com and they list breeds and breed recuers at your state, its usually a small fee you pay for these dogs. I hope you find a great dog to adopt. Good luck.

Try a breed rescue. There are several out there that rescue only certain breeds of dogs. A lot of times they go into shelters and rescue that breed type.

petfinder.com is a good place to start. Then google-Malamute Rescue- and check those dogs out.
