Many years ago, the Catholic church wanted to detour people away from their old traditions. So, they began using evangelistic tools like redefining pagan holidays. For instance, December 25 was the day the god Mithra was born from a rock in a cave. There are parallels of Mithra, RA, Nimrod, Marduk, Apollo and a few others. The names may originally be synonymous. I know Nimrod, Ra, and Marduk are rooted to the same king who lived. Christ was actually born in September near the Jewish New Year and December 25 is close to the date when Gabriel appeared to Mary.

The time of crucifixion was near Passover. There are also springtime celebrations around the same time. Astarte is supposed to be the goddess of springtime. Another way to say Astarte is Easter. Many of the celebrations during this time were crisscrossed. The Catholic Church used it as an evangelistic tool to gain more converts.

Halloween was originally named something else. The Catholics used the time as an attempt to point people back to God and Christianity. It became known as Hallowed Eve and All Saints Day. Actually, the original festival can be traced back to a yearly memorial instituted by Noah following the flood. The time of the flood is believed to be near the Jewish New Year as well. The time of this celebration was altered along with its practices. The time of the celebration was moved forward about a month. There's written evidence that a king moved the time of the festival in scriptures. As we know, this festival is very widespread among pagan cultures. However, the original date for the celebration is kept in the Jewish New Year.

It comes down to the Catholic Church using changes to the holidays in an attempt to turn people's attention to God.

Christmas is based on similar Pagan celebrations. But Christmas, as the celebration of the birth of Christ is still a Christian Holiday. I get a lot of flack from my fellow Pagans for saying so, but it's true. Many things that go into the celebration of Christmas were borrowed from the Pagans, such as the Christmas tree, but the intent is to celebrate the birth of Christ. I think it's terrible that so many Christians are afraid to celebrate now that they know the "true origins".

Satan did not create a counterfeit of Christmas or any other holidays. The pagan holidays came FIRST!

The Church had no idea when Jesus was born, so they co-opted the Winter Solstice Festival of the Saturnalia, so that pagans could convert and kept their popular festivals. They've admitted it! This is the time of year when all the Mystery Cult god-men were born (of virgins). They also died on trees (Acts 5:30,10:39,13:29;I Peter 2:24) and rose from the dead .... Hmm ...

The only mention of a bday celebration in the bible ended in the beheading on john the babtist one of jesus closest friends. Some preachers will tell you bdays & christmas are pagan but that its ok because we do it for the kids, for fun or its tradition. What are people to do when there preacher leads them the wrong way? You can look up in any encyclopedia & read the history of xmas. The bible also says stay away from tradition. And that gods name is Jehovah which makes people cringe & get fighting mad. People are closed minded to the truth they are locked in tradition.

In all probability, Jesus was born in the warmer months of the year.
Christ's Mass was celebrated at the winter solstice in order to
force or encourage the pagans to choose between celebrating a pagan holiday or a Christian holiday.

The concept of christmas is not pagan. The marketing dept and the materialistic society that we belong to has turned into a pagan ritual. I personally dont need the christmas tree or the presents to celebrate the birth of Christ. I dont think that God has bigger fish to fry then our paganism. We cant seem to obey the 10 simple commandments.

I doubt he cares, though if you look into the stories on both sides, you can see how they blend pretty well. The Christmas season echoes many factors of Yule, with the rebirth of the Sun on the shortest day of the year. It also echoes Hanukkah, which has some similar connotations in its past.

As for birthdays, if you go back far enough, everything is Pagan. Christianity only goes back two millenia, give or take.

toniann m,
"if christmas is a pagan holiday?"
Yes.

"do you think GOD is angry that christians use it as his sons birthday."
No. Not for that. It's the lie behind it all that I think He sees. The confusion that results from the tradition of it. But it's not like Christmas happened and God was surprised by it's sudden appearance. He saw it coming and as Jesus said, " My sheep hear my voice."

I know that God can forgive those that practice it, but for faith, as He can forgive me for all that I have done in sin. I hope that I'm not conveying some kind of 'perfection' of myself. I am far from that!
